FAQ’s About Crowns

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that are permanently placed over damaged teeth to protect, improve aesthetics, and restore normal function. With today’s materials, generally ceramic or porcelain, crowns can be custom shaped and colored to match a patient’s other teeth nearly identically.

What are reasons to consider getting crowns?

Dental crowns are used for several reasons. Among the most common are to restore teeth affected by severe cavities, fracture, or root canal treatment. Crowns are also placed to restore dental implants, and to anchor bridges placed to restore missing teeth. In addition, Dr. Hunte may recommend crowns for cosmetic reasons such as discolored, misshapen, or chipped teeth.

What can patients expect when getting crowns?

When getting a crown, part of the tooths enamel must be removed to ensure a proper fit. After this is completed, an impression is made of their damaged tooth. This impression is then sent to a dental lab where the custom crown is fabricated. While waiting for a permanent crown to be made, Dr. Hunte will install a temporary crown for protection. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented in place.

How long do crowns last?

When well-cared for a crown can easily last up to 15 years, and in some cases much longer. It is possible for crowns to become damaged or loose over time. To best prevent this, patients should practice healthy dental hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly and going for professional cleanings at least twice a year. In addition, patients should avoid chewing on ice, popcorn kernels and other hard foods. Doing so can crack crowns, as well as your natural teeth.
